The Gala Dinner and Entertainment will take place in the 500-seat Imperial Room on the lobby level at the Fairmont Royal York, a large and historic downtown hotel. It is a 20 minute walk from the official DHI Conference site, Westin Harbour Castle (see map below for directions from Point A [Westin Harbour Castle] to Point B [Fairmont Royal York]).

The evening will begin with a reception and silent auction at 6:00 p.m. in the foyer of the Imperial Room. Dinner will be served from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., followed by two live performances given by Angela Petrone Stratity and David Burke.

David Burke

Hailing from a Deaf family, Angela is a native of Canada and an internationally known performer. She has produced a 90-minute DVD – You Think DEAF People Have Problems (1999), and co-authored Deaf Women in Canada (2001). Angela has been actively involved with the Canadian Cultural Society of the Deaf since its 1970 inception. For more information, you may want to check out Angela’s website at www.deafutopia.com. This talented artist will undoubtedly entertain and delight the audience at our gala dinner.

David has a lifelong love of telling stories. In 1999 and 2003, he was the winner of the ASL Storytelling Section of the Ladder Awards (initially known as the Deaf Heritage Literature Awards, a program established by the Canadian Cultural Society of the Deaf). David has performed across Canada and has been actively involved with the Winnipeg International Storytelling Festival since 2006. He is passionate about Canadian passenger trains and preserving Deaf history in his home province of Manitoba.

Important Note about Parking: The Fairmont Royal York does not have any parking facilities. However, the Toronto-Dominion Tower Parking Garage is located behind the hotel and has underground connections to the hotel. Valet parking is also available at the East Entrance of the hotel.


A Bit of Deaf History: The Royal York Hotel was the first Canadian site to host a National Fraternal Society of the Deaf (NFSD) event — the 13th Quadrennial Convention, on July 10–15, 1939.
