Call for Platform Interpreters (ASL-English, LSQ-French and IS)

The DHI Conference 2012 Planning Committee is now accepting applications for conference interpreters. Both hearing and Deaf applicants are welcome to apply.
General Qualifications for Consideration
ASL = American Sign Language | LSQ = Langue des Signes Québécoise | IS = International Sign
Consideration will be given to both certified and non-certified interpeters providing that they send us the submission requirements as outlined below.
- Interpreting skills from:
- ASL to English and English to ASL
- LSQ to French and French to LSQ as well as LSQ to ASL and ASL to LSQ
- IS to English and English to IS as well as IS to ASL and ASL to IS
- Association of Visual Language Interpreters of Canada (AVLIC) – Certification of Interpreting (COI)
- Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Certification (USA) / National Association of the Deaf (NAD) Certification (USA) — CI and CT, CSC, CDI, NAD Level IV or V, NIC Advanced, NIC Master
- Other experiences and/or qualifications as an interpreter (e.g., interpreter training program)

Submission Requirements

to print a copy) - A cover letter of interest, including preferences as well as strengths and weakness
- A copy of your resume (highlighting conference, workshop or platform interpreting experience)
- Two letters of reference from previous conference interpreting team coordinators and/or interpreting committee chairs
- One letter from a Deaf consumer or a colleague with whom you interpreted alongside at a conference
- A ten-minute unrehearsed DVD video demonstrating your ASL-English or LSQ-French interpreting skills (sign to voice and voice to sign). Samples must show the ASL or LSQ source with interpreting voice as well as the ASL or LSQ interpreting and the English or French source. Deaf interpreters need only to submit conference level team work samples.
- International Sign (IS) interpreters need only to submit a ten-minute unrehearsed DVD video demonstrating their interpreting skills from IS to English and vice-versa as well as IS to ASL and vice-versa.
Compensation Packages
Successful applicants who will provide ASL/English, LSQ/French and International Sign (IS) interpretation will be compensated for their services as per contract (available Spring 2012). Other costs may include accommodation, travel and meals. Compensation packages will be discussed in confidence.
- Full-time or half-time interpreters will be paid between $40.00 and $50.00 CAD per hour, depending on qualifications.
- Interpreters, who will agree to work a minimum of 10 hours during the conference and waive their interpreting fees, will receive a complimentary Combo Registration Ticket (Value: $550.00 CAD) to access all conference events. They must complete and mail the Participant Registration Form (along with their Application Form to Interpret at Conference) to the Chair, Interpreting Committee of the DHI Conference 2012 as soon as possible. DO NOT SEND TO THE REGISTRATION COMMITTEE.
- Interpreters whose working schedule at the conference will require an overnight hotel stay will be reimbursed at half of the double occupancy room rate.
- Compensation packages are not available for interpreters from outside the North American continent who would like to come to the conference and interpret in their own national sign language. However, a discounted rate for their Combo Registration Ticket is available. In order to be eligible, they must fill out the "Registration Form for Designated Interpreter" (click here
to print a copy). This form will require a list of accompanying delegates/participants for whom they will be interpreting in their own national/home country sign language. Their conference registration numbers must be included as well. We will not process the form without this information.

Application Package
Submission requirements are to be sent via postal mail as soon as possible for early consideration and selection. They must be postmarked no later than December 31, 2011 February 29, 2012.
